Maxillaria tenuifolia

$24.99

Maxillaria tenuifolia, better known as the Coconut Orchid for its amazing scent, is a great orchid for beginners.  From Central and South America, this species grows in warm to cool temperatures and likes intermediate light.  Although some sources say this species likes a winter rest, I have never given my big guy a rest, and he blooms reliably.  In summer, provide ample water and watch this guy grow like a weed.

Flowers are dark brick red with gold spots, and the scent is amazing.  You will be transported to the beach with the smell of coconut suntan oil.  I love the form of this plant, too, with its oval pseudobulbs and long thin leaves.  If you want a really unusual version of this classic species, check out the variegated version.

Blooming size plants potted in moss.
