Who We Are
New World Orchids is owned and operated by Dr. Kristen Uthus with help from her husband, Dr. Kevin Wehrly, and her two sons, Henry and Gus. Although they specialize in Japanese orchid species, in the last year, they have expanded their collection back into the New World by offering a number of miniature orchid species from other parts of the world. Kristen travels to orchid societies all over the country to talk about orchids, particularly Neofinetia falcata. She, and sometimes the whole family, also travel to orchid shows throughout the year.
NWO’s goal is to bring you beautiful plants, pots, and books along with caring customer service and support necessary to ensure your success with and enthusiasm for this truly unique group of orchids.
Products and Information
We have tried to arrange our products so that they are easy to find; don’t forget that you can always use the search feature. When searching for Japanese orchids, spelling can be a challenge. Using partial names is very helpful, like just “Hime” for Himeseikai (which can also be written Hime Seikai). You will also find culture sheets for Neos and Dendrobium moniliforme. I will expand this section soon.
If you are looking for an item that is either out of stock or not on the site, please don’t hesitate to contact me by phone (734-369-1776) or email (nwo@newworldorchids.com) because the website is never completely up to date.
There is a lot of information in the updates section, too. It’s meant to be interactive, so you can make comments on the posts there. I have a couple of posts on Neo care, and if you are new to Fuukiran, this post for Neo Neophytes can be very helpful. You can also sign up for the newsletter to receive the occasional missives that I send out. Believe me, you don’t have to worry about your inbox being overwhelmed with my emails… And, of course, we don’t share our information.
I try to list events that I will be attending both here and on Facebook. Please feel free to contact me with preorders for shows and speaking engagements. There is always a 10% discount for preorders. If you would like me to come to your society’s show or come speak at a meeting, please contact me–I’d love to come!
