Rhynchostylis gigantea (Orange Form)

$49.99

Rhynchostylis gigantea is a vandaceous orchid from SE Asia that grows in intermediate to hot conditions although it favors warmth.  I find that it does best in moderate light and should be treated like a vanda as far as watering.  Don’t let it sit wet, but make sure you water thoroughly when you water.

Although these guys don’t get very tall, the are rather wide.  I love their stocky appearance–they don’t look delicate at all until they bloom.  The flowers are exquisite, as is their scent.  There is a reason why this species is the parent in so many popular hybrids.  Rhynchostylis gigantea comes in a number of color morphs, but a friend inspired me to go for the orange (thanks, Lenny!).

For the sake of shipping, the plants will come bare root, but I grow them in mesh pots/baskets with medium bark.  If you are a home grower, you need some media around those roots to prevent them from drying out too fast.

Blooming size; bare root
