Description
Rhynchostylis gigantea is a vandaceous orchid from SE Asia that grows in intermediate to hot conditions although it favors warmth. I find that it does best in moderate light and should be treated like a vanda as far as watering. Don’t let it sit wet, but make sure you water thoroughly when you water.
Although these guys don’t get very tall, the are rather wide. I love their stocky appearance–they don’t look delicate at all until they bloom. The flowers are exquisite, as is their scent. There is a reason why this species is the parent in so many popular hybrids. Rhynchostylis gigantea comes in a number of color morphs, but a friend inspired me to go for the orange (thanks, Lenny!).
They are mounted, but I suggest that home growers pot them in a large bark mix to keep the humidity up around the roots. Or grow them however you grow your other vandas.
This batch is particularly large (most have 8-10 leaves), and some are in spike (first come, first served).
