Description
Habenaria rhodocheila is a terrestrial orchid native to SE Asia. During the active growing season, the plant should be kept in moderate light with high humidity and warm temperatures. The roots should be allowed to dry out slightly between waterings. Many people grow Habenarias in a soil-less potting mix or a combination of potting mix and small bark. Flowers come in the summer and are very fragrant. Although flower color can vary in this species, these are a salmon pink. You can see more information on the AOS website here.
When the foliage fades in the fall, cut back on watering right away. Plants are dormant through the winter when temperatures drop to the intermediate range (50-85 degrees F). The soil should be mostly dry through this period. One friend suggests growing something like the houseplants wandering Jew in the pot as a soil moisture indicator. When the indicator plant starts to fade, you need to add a little water. Once the new Habenaria shoot emerges in the spring, increase watering.
