Description
The genus Zootrophion was so named because the flowers look like the heads of animals (look at them from the side for the full effect). Easy to grow and bloom!
Zootrophion dayanum (“Day’s Zootrophion”) is a small-sized, cool to warm-growing epiphytic species originating from the Andes of Venezuela, Colombia, Peru and Ecuador in wet montane forests or cloud forests that blooms in the fall on a single flowered inflorescence with a pendulous flower, 1/2″, dark purple with yellow flower. The foliage on Zootrophions make them lovely little plants even when they aren’t in bloom. Zootrophion dayanum is particularly lovely because the underside of the leaves is dark purple.
Like other pleurothallids, I grow them in moss and keep them consistently moist. These guys will take low to moderate light.
