Description
Vanda Hiroshima Choice (V. flabellata x Neof. falcata) is a sweet little hybrid between two small-flowered Vandas that brings out the best of both. Plants are relatively small, reaching approx. 4-6 inches (10-15cm) in height and producing offshoots readily rather than tall growths. As a primary hybrid, colors vary in tone and intensity, but all seem to have pink/lavendar as the main color and varying amounts of brown like V. flabellata. Similarly, the lip is very showy, typically white with pink/purple spots. The flowers are fragrant and long-lasting. An additional benefit to most growers is that both parents are cold tolerant, so they are easier to grow for us non-Floridians!
We are growing V. Hiroshima Choice two different ways: like a standard Vanda, i.e., in a basket with a very chunky bark mix OR in clay pots with a similar mix. The roots grow vigorously and are a great indicator of general plant happiness. Because both parents are cold tolerant, grow in moderate light and warm to cool temperatures. Water well then allow to dry out which will mean daily watering unless you grow this in a pot. If you find that the roots are drying out, add more chunky mix to the pot or basket to maintain more humidity around the roots. You can also grow the plant in a clay pot with a chunky bark mix to minimize watering. I have had excellent success with standard Vandas in pots here in Michigan.

Plant just arrived! It shipped very fast. I believe it only took two days. The orchid came in good condition with only one bent leaf. But one out of eight or so leaves… I think that’s alright. The plant also came in a basket with bark and a metal hanger that you have to attach. I thought that was pretty considerate for them to include with the plant. I’m very excited to see it flower!
