Description
Vanda flabellata, the fan-shaped vanda, comes from China, Myanmar, and Thailand as a cool to warm growing species that produces long sprays of many beautifully colored flowers with spots. I do love spots. There are different color morphs of this species, and the ones blooming now (Thanksgiving) are very light colored with very dark brown spots. In addition, he has a ruffled lip–beautiful! I love the fact that this guy has all the attributes that makes it easy to grow: it is relatively small (not a miniature, but not a monster), it likes moderate light, and it takes cool to warm temps. Simple!
Vanda flabellata is popular for hybridizing because of its lovely, ruffly, spotted flowers and relatively compact nature. Check out Vanda Pramote for an example of what a great parent he makes.
Plants are giant blooming size and will perform well in a basket or a big clay pot with a mix of organic and inorganic media. Grows cool to warm and in moderate to high light. These are so big I struggle to get them in a “normal” size box. Not my typical miniature guys, that’s for sure.
