Description
Restrepia muscifera is a Central and South American species and a member of the pleurothallid alliance. This is an unusual restrepia because it is a warm to cool grower. Flowers are perhaps the most beautiful of all the restrepias, and there are sometimes more than one per inflorescence! The wine-colored markings on the white background, often with a little yellow thrown in, is absolutely gorgeous. Each plant’s flowers are slightly different, but all are uniformly lovely. If you like restrepias (or pleurothallids in general) at all, you must have this one.
General Info
Although restrepias are typically known as cool-growers, they grow well under intermediate conditions as well. A versatile genus, they grow well either mounted or potted depending on the level of attention that you are willing to provide. They only ask to be kept evenly moist. Grow under moderate to low light, and you will be rewarded with beautiful flowers nearly year round and a fast-growing plant. In fact, I have found that lower light promotes better blooming. Plants prefer moderate to high humidity and good air circulation. Terrariums are a great place for restrepias although they do not have to be in one.
