Description
Hawaiian mythology describes Menehune as small people that live deep in the forests. My friend Steve says that his grandma in Hawaii always puts out a tiny glass of alcohol to appease the Menehune when she is planning an outdoor party. Nakamotoara Menehune Charm (Ascda. Blue Tahourdin ‘Bronze Grape’ x Neof. falcata) is a beautiful little plant that lives up to its name. I find that it stays much more compact than some of the other Neo hybrids such as Lou Sneary–more Neo-sized which is great if you have limited space. The flower color varies among plants and may be solid pinky-purple, pink, or pink and white. Flowers are fragrant, held high above the plant on sturdy spikes. The flowers are quite large compared to the plant and compared to Neo species.
I have grown Menehune Charm in small baskets with either no media or very chunky bark and charcoal or Growstone. The roots grow very vigorously and vary in root tip color from mud (most common) to ruby (less common). Very easy to grow: intermediate light, warm to cool temperatures, and water well then allow to dry out. If you have it in a basket, you can water it every day. If you find that the roots are drying out, add more chunky mix to the pot or basket to maintain more humidity around the roots.
