Description
Ludisia discolor var. nigrescens is a jewel orchid similar to probably the most well known jewel orchid, Ludisia discolor. Although they are the same species, this variety has one colored vein running the length of the leaf and giving the plant a darker appearance overall (thus the name). As with other jewel orchids, Ludisia discolor var. nigrescens is a terrestrial orchid. I prefer to grow them in moss which retains moisture while providing some air pockets around the roots as well. Grow intermediate to warm, KEEP MOIST, and put in moderate to low light. Did I say keep moist? High humidity is helpful, but not a requirement if you keep the media moist. Terrariums are excellent for growing this and all jewel orchids. Find an old fish tank and fill it with jewel orchids! What could be more beautiful?
These are potted in moss in 2″ pots and most have at least two growths (see pictures).
