Description
Erycina pusilla, formerly Oncidium pusillum, is a super-mini twig epiphyte native to Central and South America. While Wikipedia notes that it makes “orchid-shaped flowers” (OMG–and there’s some other misinformation in there, so beware), I would describe them as Oncidium-shape or dancing lady flowers. The flowers are yellow and as big as the plant! I typically get at least four flowers at a time, usually over the summer to fall. E. pusilla does not enjoy temperatures below 50 F, particularly while it is blooming (personal observation).
The plant itself is beautiful to behold: a fan of bright green leaves similar to that of an Ornithogalum. Grow mounted, intermediate to warm, and water daily. Intermediate light will produce a great crop of flowers.
Erycina pusilla, like other twig epiphytes, is not a long-lived species. Most of mine last about three years before they end up in the bucket–I mean the great greenhouse in the sky. The nice thing is they’re pretty, they’re easy, they’re showy, and hey–that’s a great deal for $20, right?
