Dendrobium moniliforme – “Choseiran” or “Long Life Orchid” is a miniature to small Dendrobium species, native to Asia (mainly Japan, China). As nobile-type dendrobiums, and they are extremely cold tolerant, and need that colder, drier period for good blooming in the spring. They are deciduous and lose their leaves in the winter when they typically experience slow growth due to low temperatures. They produce multiple large flowers, typically white to deep pink, that are very fragrant, and they can continue to bloom throughout the spring and summer. They come in many varieties with different leaf variegation, flower color, and flower shapes. Like Neofinetia, they are very sought after and collected in Japan because of their beautiful variegated varieties.
